No trouble is keeping, quite an aggressive species when food is added.
I have 4 colonies for sale.
Many thanks Jon.
AntKit has things in the pipeline only AntKit knows is all i can say at the moment regarding livestock purchases. Watch this space.

I keep Camponotus substitutus, dark, Camponotus habereri and Camponotus herculeanus, 3 lovely species of ants.

http://i1251.photobucket.com/albums/hh554/jonwiththefish/Camponotus%20rufipes/IMG_5899%20Take%202.jpg I have chosen this Queen, due to the fact she has a damaged abdomen. http://i1251.photobucket.com/albums/hh554/jonwiththefish/Camponotus%20rufipes/IMG_5912%20Take%202.jpg Ahh, she'll be fine, finge...
I have got a few more Queens , so this will be a journal on a new Queen starting out.
I have had 4 colonies for about a year and all have ticked over pretty well. I never got round to doing a journal on them. Here are a couple of photos from one of the colonies http://i1251.photobucket.com/albums/hh554/jonwiththefish/Camponotus%20rufipes/Camponotus%20rufipes%2013%20Take%202.jpg http:...
Never noticed till to today whilst taking photos of the Queen and her different size workers that the Queens middle leg on her left hand side is missing. If you check the second photo from the top you can make out a stub of a leg. She still posed sexy enough to become the new photo on AntKit.
Coming on fine in numbers. http://i1251.photobucket.com/albums/hh554/jonwiththefish/Camponotus%20largiceps/Camponotus%20largiceps%2016%20Take%202.jpg Check out the different sizes of workers with this colony. http://i1251.photobucket.com/albums/hh554/jonwiththefish/Camponotus%20largiceps/Camponotus%...
This is a journal, please start a new thread, or there is a link below on the signature.
Many thanks Jon.
Yes, like a few other species of Camponotus, they look wicked when their abdomens are well expanded.
http://i1251.photobucket.com/albums/hh554/jonwiththefish/Camponotus%20habereri/Camponotus%20habereri%2011%20Take%202.jpg Still going strong, thought I would ask the Queen would she allow me to take a photo of her and her different sizes of workers. She was a bit shy at first. http://i1251.photobuck...
I add a tad of plain mains tap water to remineralise my RO water, so I could be reintroducing too much nutrients back in. If I get the time, i might try a selection of different waters and light levels, i suppose there is also the species of ant, how many workers. I think i am looking to deep into t...
@ Cooper, strange, dont have any Red water in our test tubes that the Ants are in. plot thickens now.
At AntKit we get the odd delivery that will have a test tube now and again with this Red colouration, doesnt appear to cause the ants in the test tube any problems, however rather than taking a chance we always move to a clean tube. I would agree with offering them another tube, so they can move if ...
Are you providing insect protein a couple of times a week?
The Black is nothing to worry about, its just general ware n tear and ant poo. Provide a second clean test beside the first one so you have given them choice if they would like to move.
Messor aciculatus, Messor structor do fine together.
also, Crematogaster sordidula, Formica fusca and Myrmica rubra will often do fine with more than one Queen.
Agree with keeping M. barbarus separated.
Many thanks Jon.
http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z173/jon2thefish/Camponotus%20pseudoirritans/Camponotus%20pseudoirritans%2010.jpg They all decided to cram into the small test tube. http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z173/jon2thefish/Camponotus%20pseudoirritans/Camponotus%20pseudoirritans%208.jpg http://i191.pho...
Decided this colony needed to be moved to a clean tank with some larger test tubes....... Bit interesting moving this lot.
This is lovely long legged, slender ant that can move really fast when it needs to.
Woo look at the size of that.
LOL @ release-the-beast.
Nice looking setup there, and great to see workers.
Very cool.
The local environment will have to adapt?
That's the spirit .
I made a mistake, but im not paying for it.
This bloke is brilliant lol, With the title Exspert and $ mentioned. I can wait for what is next. I might sit here than watch the Walking dead tonight.
