20/10/2016 I know I said I would leave it a few days, but having talked to some forum members I decided to remove the cotton wool plug and let them loose into the outworld. Before doing so I placed a small piece of protein jelly in the end of a pipette (the RobJ way). With in minutes of removing th...

This is my first attempt at keeping ants and writing a journal. 19/10/2016 Today I received my Lasius Niger, thank you Luke @ antkit. It looks to be a queen and about 15+ workers. There are also several small white things (technical term there ;-) ) I think they maybe larva. The cotton wool at the w...

What is the minimum colony size for the acrylic nest size 04?

I have a Antkit starter kit 04 and Lasius Niger Queen and workers arriving this week and I'm now worried it may be too big.
I may just put the test tube in the Outworld without the nest connected for now.

So if I was to buy the Lasius Niger queen only. What sort of time are we talking before it gets to 50 workers? At that point I would transfer from test tube to acrylic nest and Outworld. There is the sense of achivement to raising a colony from a queen only. But getting a few workers head start migh...

Is 60-62% humidity to high for Lasius Niger? I'm going to be keeping my colony in the living room, which is next to the kitchen. At the moment i'm finding that the room humidity it getting up towards 60-62% in the mornings and evenings. The temp it ranging from 20-24. But i'm concerned the humidity ...

Have you tried making the new test tube dark by covering it, and maybe put a light on the dirty one. This might make the new tube look more appealing to the ants.
Are the tubes connected directly to each other?
Sorry i have limited knowledge on all things ant, but remember reading this somewhere :-D

So my setup has been ordered from antkit. Not ordered the ants yet, want to get the setup ready first. Still can't choose either Lasius Niger or now Myrmica rubra. I'm leaning more towards the fire ant. So as a first step what do I need to do the first month once I have received the ants. I guess it...

When I emailed the seller he said 12-15 days to ship to the UK from Russia, that's not to bad. i have gone with Antkit for my first setup now, if all goes well I may try the Russian one for the second colony. :-D

Thanks :-D

Thanks for the advice. If Lasius flavus like to hide and are shy I think i'm going to go for Lasius niger and the Antkit set up, although i do like the look of the Tar Heel set ups. I will keep it easy to clean and maintain for the first attempt by using the Antkit nest. Hopefully i can place an ord...

@T.C. Hi Thanks for the quick reply, im in the UK so things aren't to warm here at the moment and i cant think of the last time i saw a wild ant anyway. I think my first go i will buy a Queen + workers, instead of trying to catch and identify a Queen. I see AntKit is out of Lasius niger at the mome...
