Advice Needed, Decorating Antkit Modular Arenas

by Cyrus01 ¦  Thu Mar 23, 2017 9:18 pm ¦  Forum: General Ant Keeping ¦  Topic: Advice Needed, Decorating Antkit Modular Arenas ¦  Replies: 3 ¦  Views: 488

Hi, just ordered one of Antkits new modular arenas ( size 02). To any one who has one and has decorated it, where do you start?
Is it worth putting a acrylic plate as a base for the grout?
Do you make it a loose fit or fixed to the side of the arena?
It's going to be for messor barbarus.
Cheers

Hi, what size set up would you recommend for a messor barbarus queen + 20-30? I'm thinking test tube connected to a robj mini out world as a start moving to a antkit modular out world later.

20/03/2017 Found my first honey casualty today. I use diluted honey on a cotton bud, but just found one deep in a small pool that had formed under it. Rest of colony are doing great. Still loads brood, and hiding deep inside the test tube. The cotton wool in the tube is covered in stones, and they h...

They are upto their old tricks again and builds a massive pile of stones at the test tube entrance. They have also made a 3mm thick layer of stones against their test tube water reservoir, I'm g...

I'm planning to get a Messor Barbarus colony soon. I'm doing my pre purchase home work and I was wandering, what the best way to heat them. From looking at my lasius niger journal the temp jumps from 21 to 25 mostly arround 23. So to get it to a steady 25 I'm going to need a heat source. I'm thinkin...

17/02/2017 So I took the chance and taped the two tubes together end to end. Placed my phone light on it and within 5 minutes queenie had moved shorty followed by the workers. It was great to watch them move the brood. One worker was using gravel and trying to fill the join between the two tubes. A...

Thanks for the response. That's was what I figured, I guess wait abit and see if activity picks up. As in the pic a few posts up the test tubes are end to end. When you say plugging them together, how would I do that? Here is a pic from tonight. There is a load of larvae and several piles of eggs. I...

06/02/2017 So its been over 3 weeks since i removed the red cover from their test tube. Its must be over 2 weeks since the last of the water in the test tube ran out. 23/01/2017 So it's been over a week now since I removed the red acrylic cover. Queenie is showing no sign of moving out. There tube is almost dry and the cotton wool is looking mouldy. Numbers are unknown at the moment. I counted at least 15 yesterday, but I can see more further inside the tubes cotton wool. I haven't hibernated them and they are very active. There is brood of various stages as seen in the video above. I'm hoping the numbers will explode soon as the have been 15-2...

12/01/2017 A question for the forum, the colony is nearly out of water. The test tube they are in is going to be dry in the next couple of weeks. The reservoir in their test tube has about an inch wide pocket of water, but its down to about 2mm deep. So in my mind the options are: 1. Put a new test...

I currently only have one colony at the moment, with plans for a second soon. With multiple colonies do you have to be careful with cross contamination? For example i use tweezers for adding and removing food, and general cleaning of the outworld. Do i need to be careful about not using the same equ...

07/01/2017 So to the first update of the new year. They haven't been very active last couple of months as expected, but as their not hibernating there has been some movement. Would appear they are destined to not hibernate this year. I can see several larvae but there are also some pale coloured workers, I guess they're newly hatched.
So to hibernate or not, I hate making decisions.

I will update with pics once they are in hibernation. One more question before i put them into hibernation. I have been reading on the forum about hibernation and its effects on brood. At the moment they have brood and it looks to be mostly larvae, is it safe to still hibernate now? I have read its ...

I'm looking to replace my lasius niger test tube before they go in to hibernation.
ebay is just expensive compared to antkits prices. :-(

03/12/16 I picked up the lucky reptile herp nursery today. I plan to use it to hibernate my lasius niger. I have run it a few hours and it's holding nicely at 9.3 degrees. The plan is maybe tomorrow set it to 20 degrees and place the lasius niger and their outworld with test tube inside. Then over ...

Thanks guys for the info. I have just dropped in a cut up locusts and protein jelly. I'm almost certain they are hibernating as they are huddled at the far end of the test tube. 28/11/2016 So i think its fair to say that queenie and her girls have gone into hibernation. At least i think they have, they have blocked the test tube with sand and haven't taken any food in weeks. I haven't seen them at the honey or sugar water either, but i'm continuing to offer them fresh ever...

Hi, and welcome to the forum. I have had my first colony a month now and I went with Lasius Niger. They really are easy to look after and ideal for beginners. As for the starter kits, all I would say is the nest in the starter kit 4 is really a lot bigger than you think. I bought a starter kit 4 and...

18/11/2016 The colony continues to grow, this morning I managed to count 18 workers. But I still can’t fully see within the cavity in the cotton wool plug. The brood continues to grow, there now appears to be double the number of larvae (30+). So hopefully by the New Year my colony could be up to 4...
