Lasius niger. You can do just about anything to them and they'll be fine. They're basically impossible to kill, cheap, relatively good growth rate and quite active

Lasius niger is virtually indestructible but they can grow pretty big (up to 40.000 workers after several years). If that's an issue Formica fusca is about twice as large, similarly resilient, about as widespread and only grows to about 2-3000 workers.
